Eric, I am not aware of any data showing risks of supplementation. Actually, the studies show that sodium butyrate has anti-cancer effects. Of course, I feel that the healthier the gut is overall the better a patient will do. I have found that I have to start with two butyrate’s a day and work up to 2 twice to three times a day depending on gut tolerability. I am including below an excerpt from a 2020 study.

Background
Sodium butyrate (NaB) is a short-chain fatty acid which is produced by bacterial fermentation of nondigestible dietary fiber and has been reported to exert anti-tumor effects in many tumors including colorectal cancer (CRC).
