My worst long-haul covid patient is now a year out. She is a 41 year old female who is doing significantly better but not back to baseline yet and has developed 2 new symptoms.

In early spring she was barely able to sleep an hour and a half. She was so fatigued that she was unable to work and in fact had to get a nanny to help with her children.  She is now sleeping 6 hours and is back to 80% energy.

Her new symptoms are a sharp chest pain that comes throughout the day intermittently and is not related to movement or food. She has had a full cardiac workup that shows no evidence of ischemic issues but she does have an elevated pulmonary artery pressure.

Her second new symptom is myoclonic twitches/jerks when she lays down to go to sleep or when she just sits and relaxes.

She is on multiple supplements and peptides including BPC TA1 VIP, DH HB, magnesium, vitamin C, vitamin D, butyrate, Biotagen, L glutamine, arterosil, and the PRodrome Neuro and Glia and phosphatidyl choline.

ANy thought about the new symptoms would be appreciated.

    Hi Flip,

I would up the magnesium to at least 800 mgs . Even in one dose. Clonic twitches and jerks go away with Kava Kava by Gaiam 1softgel whenever they occur. Kava will stop a clonic seizure and Benzos don’t make a dent. I have personal experience with Kava as I had clonic seizures when I was ill years ago from a chronic illness. Try it!

I know this might sound a bit of mystical advice but we had a patient case with EXACTLY the same symptoms and experience. When she realized the medical doctors could not help her, she gave up on the medical approach. So she approached one of Dr. Joe Dispenza’s long week events on how to become supernatural. When she came back to see us a month later, ALL of her symptoms were gone and she felt more alive than she had ever experienced in her entire life. She honestly left us flabbergasted b/c she looked and sounded renewed.

    Hey Flip-

I’m on vacation so my response will be short here, but I’m happy to elaborate after if you had follow up questions.

First, I agree with Rita about the magnesium if that is the issue (low mag), however with most of my patients who are complex medically (and yours are complex too usually I think) those jerks are about brain inflammation usually infectious in nature (Sydenham’s,  Lyme, Bartonella, etc). And of course, something like CoVid could upset the balance of a patient with not yet diagnosed chronic issues with tick-born issues, or those in remission.  So I would consider a “dive” into the possibility of CoVid having unmasked something like these. (Side note here: while I expected my complex medical patients to do worse with CoVid than the standard human… oddly/unexpectedly those in remission did NOT hardly have issues at all.  I’m not sure what to say about this except maybe all of the work already done on them prevented a hyper-inflammatory response (or maybe, their immune systems were “unimpressed” with CoVid after years of serious infections and so didn’t “over-react”).

Chest pain in this patient scares me. Is it possible that this was in response to a second mild case of CoVid reactivating the antibody response to CoVid and having these attack her heart muscle, etc? I have seen this many times now (both first and second cases). We have a cardiologist we have been working with since early CoVid who helps us with these.  Lots of them have normal “cardiac work ups”, and still need treatment due to the angina being vascular spasm (inflammatory) related as opposed to  a structural cause. These patients have responded to colchicine, Nitroglycerin/isosorbide and indomethacin. Regardless of the cause of lack of blood flow – damage can be caused.

Lastly, a “shout out” to Dayan and his plasmalogens (see “Trusted Sources”) ….
In my N of 6, his Glia has almost completely turned around up to 1.5 year long long-haulers’ neuro symptoms, and up to 5 mos persistent O2 requirements within 1 week. Truly, I have cried with patients (joy) with the miracle of this supplement on more than one occasion.

-cynthia (who wasn’t as “short” in her response as expected)

*Michael, I agree the mind-body-spirit connection can be miraculous. I have often seen chronic illness inspire my patients to change themselves/their lives/their beliefs, thereby inciting healing/health/wellness.  In fact, I aim for helping patients to accept the invitation of chronic illness to re-evaluate and re-define who they are in the world, how they live, what their goals are, etc. While noticing that chronic illness announces that something in their life isn’t working thereby inspiring change doesn’t always bring about the type of cure you saw; using chronic illness as a “wake up” call is rarely a waste of time.  While we all know this, it is worth restating that not all suffering that we aim to help heal is physical.

Thank you all for your suggestions.

Rita she is maximized on magnesium with out much change.

Miguel we have been working on mind-body-spirit connection all along. She is not quite ready for one of Dr. Joe Dispenza’s week long events.

Cynthia, we are looking for underlying chronic infections. She is the one that we talked about with decreasing WBCs/neutaphils.

I will keep you informed of any changes.

next time you check the CBC, etc…. Maybe consider adding on a CD57 (as sort of a poor-man’s marker of if something like a chronic tick-borne infection is beating down the immune system.). For me, while not diagnostic, this lab is a nice easy thing to follow to ask “who is winning the Lyme or the person?”

    Keep me posted

Her WBCs have always been low but have dropped to less than 3.0 this year. She ended up with a bone marrow biopsy which shows trilinear hematopoiesis  but only 20-30 normal cells. (The hematologist told her that is the level he might expect in an 80 y/o.) I’ve attached a summary of the report.  Any thoughts on how best to support bone marrow? I’ve also attached a summary of her report.
