In my CIRS training it was emphasized to wait until the patient is ready to use VIP and to then only slowly titrate it up, checking labs monthly. This super slow titration would start at the 50mcg/ml dose, then 250mcg/ml then finally the 500mcg/ml level. As I look at some of Dr. Naviaux’s research on the cell danger response and peptides importance in changing tom the proliferative to inflammatory then healing phases, I have to wonder if VIP could be used in other conditions. After a quick PubMed search I was there was data on it being used in a whole host of neurological conditions.

    Questions:

1)Are people using VIP in conditions other than CIRS? if so which and what has been their experience?

2)Are people doing the strict lab testing on a monthly basis while on VIP? (personally this has limited my use of it, though with some of my severe CIRS patients it has worked quite well).

    Thanks

    Hello Aaron,

I am using VIP regularly as it is a multi-function peptide.

    1. Circadian rhythm dysfunction
    2. Gut rehab
    3. Immune system dysfunction/ CIRS
    4. Mold treatment

There are animal and mechanistic studies showing cardiac benefits.  In the heart, VIP has reactivity in the coronary arteries and veins, sinoatrial node, atrioventricular node, atrium, inter-atrial septum, and ventricles (right ventricle>left ventricle)

Delivery is challenging via a nasal route.  I try to push doses as much as tolerated.  Do not use later than 11 am or it will affect sleep.  I do not do check labs.

It improves cornary artery vasodilation, fat oxidation ( via PPAR-gamma stimulation), and increases heart rate (via SA and AV node stimulation).  VIP release is increased during coronary artery occlusion to help improve coronary blood flow and improve free radical scavenging.  This reduces myocardial reperfusion injury.  There are also some studies looking into it’s use in myocarditis.

    Interesting,

Do you ever use it SC verses intranasal?

If giving it 4 times a day, how do you not give it after 11am?

    Thanks

    Aaron

I have not used it SC.  Where have you been sourcing it?

The dosing I have used is 4 sprays per each nostril limited to the morning time.  So can usually do that once or twice if needed.

Was getting it at PD Labs but recently switched to Pure Rx Compounding.

I agree with Abid’s excellent post and appreciate the info on VIP in cardiovascular disease.   Most common uses of VIP in my practice is for circadian rhythm/shift work disorder patients to help reset the clock.  Particularly in my commercial pilot patients who cross many time zones per week.   Using intranasal.   In this scenario I am not monitoring levels and use is temporary.  Our current supplier is PURE for the VIP.

Has anyone experienced issues with weight gain using VIP? Most of our CIRS patients are women who are struggling with weight gain and insulin resistance. Should we be cautious prescribing to them?

    Thank you

I have not had weight gain.  Is that something you’re patients have experienced?
