JAMA recently published a report about the incidence rate of alpha-gal syndrome, which is a serious allergic reaction to a sugar molecule called alpha-gal, which is found in most mammals. It is typically transmitted through a bite from a Lone Star tick or other tick species that injects the molecule into the body, causing a delayed allergy to red meat and dairy. Referring to a study conducted by the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), the report points to a wide ranging presence of alpha-gal immunoglobulin E (IgE) antibodies as ranging from anywhere between 6% to 31%. Not everyone who carries the antibodies develops the allergy to red meat, the primary effect of the syndrome. In a study of 3,000 donor blood samples (2024-2025), the prevalence of the syndrome was as high as 24%. However, this number “far exceeded” the 2022 estimate of 45,000 people. The samples were derived from ten U.S. states, including the five with the highest prevalence – Arkansas, Kentucky, Missouri, Tennessee, and Virginia.
